
Many young girls consume too much information from mass media, including television, magazines,news and the Internet. According to the article, “The Relationship Between Media Consumption and Eating Disorders,” Harrison claim that “The mass media may operate as important influences on disordered eating through their impact on value, norms and aesthetic standard embraced by modern U.S. Society”. This quotation shows that the mass media plays a very important role in promoting eating disorders among American people though values, norms and aesthetic standards embraced. Women between the ages of 18 and 30 rated personal body shape alongside with those of [self-selected] of their favored celebrities . From the media, they provide the idea that people who look thin are beautiful, smart and successful. As we can see that there are many movies, commercials, printed ads or even the billboard on the high way. In the media, people who are good-looking and slim are always a good and successful people, whereas people who have an overweight body or wear loose clothes are considered as lazy with no friends. The media always promote unhealthy ideas about how thin girls need to be to be considered beautiful and successful. Thinness has become an association with success and beauty. As a consequence, these ideas create the wrong perception among teenagers. It is not necessary to have a great body to be successful and have everyone love you.
