Week 9 Finally Summary
Total positive: 20
Total negative: 10
Total neutral: 8
13 editorials and columns vs. 25 news stories
The impact that public relation played in the overall of the my topic over nine week period is that it promoted the idea that the main reason causes eating disorders among young adults is the influence of the media. As we can see that in these days, news and TV entertainment are full of the reports about young, thin Hollywood actresses who might be anorexic or bulimic. Even in TV commercials, bill boards on high way, magazines are promoted the idea of beauty. In editorials, columns and news articles, they show stories, facts and statistics on how media plays very important role in creating eating disorders among young teen girls. I think public relation efforts and key messages had the most influence on how they provided evidences, statistics and stories on how media has an impact on young girls.
I found an interesting experiment, conduct by Cusumano & Thompson, to find the link between media images and personal own images. There were two groups of people. The first group in this experiment watched 10 minute tapes of commercials that emphasize society’s view of beauty. Another group didn’t watch the commercials that emphasize beauty. The result was that the first group that watched beauty ads did not feel great about their bodies, on the other hand, those exposed to other ads felt more satisfied with their bodies. Many young women aspire to have bodies like those models in magazines or TV commercials. I think they may feel less secure with themselves when they are subjected to those beautiful models.
The proponents are more successful in getting their message across because they were more support on how the media impact on the perception of young girls. As we can see from many teen magazines, they all supported the same idea of skinny is beauty. On the other hand, opponents were less successful in getting their messages across because I did not see lot of news articles, columns or editorials that promotes the ideas of genetic, social factors are the main reason of eating disorders. I pretty much found that the main reason that causes eating disorders is media. I think there were not any clear cut cases of reporter bias in any of news stories because news articles present the factual information about the topic, no opinion or conclusion are included. Most of news articles that I found have evidences and statistics to support their messages. As a public relation counselor, I will propose to address an apparent bias that was not my favor by telling that there is a bias and I may provide more information on the other side as well but try to be as neutral as I can.

Week 6 Media Clip
Week 6 Media clip: Some people believe that the media is not the big issue for eating disorders. They believe that biological organs & genetic factors and societal factors are the main issue for eating disorders. Genetic and Hormonal factors are believed to play a main role for creating eating disorders. People with eating disorders are believed to have genetic problem lead to the illness. Individuals who have a family history of depression, alcohol abuse, obesity or eating disorders have a higher chance for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. There is a relationship between the eating behavior, such as dieting or starvation, and the nervous and hormone system. The feeling of hunger, craving and fullness are controlled by the brain and also involved a number of digestive hormones (NIMH 2008, 4) the key message is that there are other factors that cause eating disorders, such as biological organ, genetic factors or societal factors.

Week 4 Media clip

#5 of news articles vs. # 2 of columns/editorials
#6 positive, # 1 negative
For this week news articles, columns and editorials. I have found that most of them were talking about the media that is the main cause of eating disorders. I'll summarize of what I have read from news articles and editorials from this week.
The media provides the idea that people who look thin are beautiful, smart and successful. As we can see that there are many movies, commercials, printed ads or even the bill board on the highway. The frequency of reading magazines and watching TV has a positive association with the idea of losing weight or improving body shape. Even though some girls already had a healthy, normal weight, they still saw themselves as big and fat girls. Moreover, girls who have eating disorders in early adolescence use particular media to learn how to become thinner and more attractive. Some of them use media to identify models and television characters who have body shapes they admire. In addition, a media provides basics of social comparison, which may serves the motivation to lose weight.
For the Column: this information was about one girl, Jennifer Shortis who got suffered from and eating disorder since age 15. She had developed anorexia . She is now 24. She weighs 76 pounds and is still struggling to regain a normal weight. Editorial: Does Hollywood "Cause" Eating disorders? In 1983, the death of anorexic pop singer Karen Carpenter first alerted the American public to the dangerous of eating disorders but today many celebrities and their eating disorders are topics for Hollywood gossip news, TV shows and online blogs.
The different between news articles, column and editorials. News articles : present the factual information about the topic, no opinion or conclusion are included. Editorial: editorial takes a position on an issue. there are fact and opinion. The writer often take a side on what they think or believe. Columns: it is about the opinion or experience in the topic. It allow in dept information but not need to provide both side of the topic.
